Blizzard Announces New Esports Division

Major esports business news, as Blizzard Entertainment announced they created a division just for Overwatch esports, including the Overwatch League and the Overwatch World Cup.  As the company begins to focus on esports, Blizzard is turning to Major League Gaming to handle the operation of their new competitive gaming branch of the company.  MLG was acquired by Blizzard in late 2015, and is known for running live events and broadcasting esports content on its streaming service MLG.tv.

In a press release, Blizzard stated MLG will provide operations and media production for both the Overwatch League and Activision’s Call of Duty World League.  Blizzard’s own esports team will continue to handle events and programming for its other titles, including Heroes of the Storm, Hearthstone, StarCraft, and World of Warcraft for now, but those esports production teams will get help from the MLG division in the future.
